Dirt Off Your Shoulder

Thursday was a long, hard day. I was tired, stressed and I got blindsided by something that I thought I had under control. The thing that sucks is that some people are crazy and there's just no controlling that. I can be really good at letting other people's issues become my issues. I was getting totally worked up but then I thought about what Jay-Z says: Go on brush your shoulders off.

So I did. Because after all, ladies is pimps too. (That's only funny if you like Jay-Z the way I do. If not, it's just poor grammar.)

I decided I wasn't going to focus on things I don't have any control over and instead just stay positive. Sometimes, in order to stay positive I have to make a list (really, any excuse to make a list) to remind myself that there are some really good things in my life:

1) My mom is in town for a visit. Having unconditional love around is good for the soul.

2) There's a new hardcover collection of 'Calvin and Hobbes' comic strips out now. That's my all-time favorite comic and I will be asking Santa for the set this holiday season.

3) I have a massage and a hair appointment tomorrow. I'll be relaxed with good hair...and is there anything better?

4) My dad's birthday is next week and I managed to get him what will certainly go down in birthday history as one of his favorite gifts ever...from his favorite daughter.

5) Yesterday, I ran into a guy I haven't seen in a long time. As we were catching up, he interrupted me mid-sentence and said, "Are you in love or something?" I told him no and asked why. "You look as good as I've ever seen you. People are usually in love when they look that good." *For the record, that may be one of the best compliments I've ever received.*

6) I saw "Phantom of the Opera" last night. I'd never seen it before and I must confess, I wasn't sure how much I'd like it. I was generously given a ticket (I bought dinner so I wasn't a total freeloader) and now I feel guilty for getting to see that show for free because I LOVED it.

7) I have a vacation coming up in less than a month.

Shoulders were dirt free.

So this morning, I took a deep breath and dealt with the crazy. And it all worked out just fine. My 7am was a textbook Best Case Scenario. I cannot tell you how much better I feel.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to everyone who sent good thoughts. You have no idea what it meant to me.

So since we're talking about the wise words of Jay-Z here,I'll invoke The Man once again in regards to the crazy people that are sometimes unavoidable and that we are sometimes forced to deal with.

"He who does not feel me is not real to me -- therefore he doesn't exist -- so poof! Vamoose, son of a bitch..."

I personally think it's a good attitude to have!

Good for you for brushing your shoulders off. We all have down days, and we all deserve 'em. I'm glad you're feeling better. And Amber already quoted the Jay-Z lyric that I was gonna, but, just for effect I'll do it again..."He who does not feel me is not real to me -- therefore he does not exist -- so poof! Vamoose, son of a bitch."
