Am I the only one who thinks that my 14 year old sister doesn't look 14? Was I the only one who was still going through my awkward phase at 14? Karlie is already 5'7", has a body that would make most models jealous and has perfect skin. And she has no idea how beautiful she really is.
Satruday night was a girls night for us. Being that she's only 14, our girls night included manis & pedis, shopping, ordering pizza and watching movies. She also raided my closet and left with nine pairs of shoes, seven handbags, and two hats. We also went through my jewelry and she now has three new bracelets, and a new necklace.
Karlie starts high school next week and she is so excited. She's also a bit nervous but mostly, just really excited. As she was telling me about her class schedule her cell phone rang for the fifth time in less than an hour. Like the times before, she looked at the caller i.d. and then sent the call to voicemail. This is a trait she learned from me as I've been known to send a call or two or thirty to voicemail myself. When I asked her who kept calling she mentioned "some guy". She didn't elaborate much other than saying she was not interested at all but he kept calling and she didn't want to be mean to him.
"I can't wait for high school. I know the guys will be better in high school. You know, more mature?"
I didn't have the heart to tell her not to hold her breath. Of course, had I looked like her when I started high school, perhaps the guys would have been better.

In other weekend news, a funny thing happened last night. I was sitting in the living room working on the computer...and by "working", I mean trying to outbid someone on eBay for my Blue Moon Ghetto cd. (Sidebar: This Katie girl on eBay had better pray she never meets me in a dark alley someday.) Anyway, as I was working, this song came on the radio.
Music has this amazing ability to take you back. You can instantly be back to a certain time or place. You can hear a song and remember so many vivid details about that time in life that are otherwise archived away in the far corners of your memory. It's one of the coolest things about music but it can sometimes be one of the most bittersweet as well. As I was singing along with the song I thought, "Wow, it's been such a long time since I've heard this song."
A few hours later, as I got ready for bed, I found myself humming that song again. As I pulled my hair back into the usual bedtime ponytail, it occured to me that I used to like that song for a very specific reason; a specific person. I stood there somewhat stunned for a moment - I couldn't believe that "reason" wasn't the first thing that popped into my head when I heard the song. I crawled into bed knowing that things were different now. There was no ache. I had archived him and not even realized it. I didn't know when or how it had happened, but I just knew he'd been archived. And as I closed my eyes, a wide grin spread over my face as I fell into what was one of the most peaceful nights sleep I'd had in quite some time.
That, my friends, is what they call "closure".

If this is Karlie's "awkward phase," then I can't wait to see what happens when the ugly duckling becomes a swan. Sigh. I'm still waiting to get out of MY awkward phase.
I think the only awkward phase that baby has had was when she was like 2 and cut her own bangs. And yet...she still looked like a doll.
At the request of my client, Kendra, I'd like to say that if you're going to be a perv about her FOURTEEN YEAR OLD SISTER, you should back the f*** up, because your comment will be deleted anyway.
I would say it in a nicer way, but there really isn't one.
wow I think I missed something, but I also think I am glad I missed it...anyway your sister is cute and she sounds down to earth too. I think it's sweet of you not to say anything about the high school boys. And hurrah for closure!
Everytime I hear the Eminem song "Kim" it reminds me of my ex fiance. Ahh...closure.
Anyway, hopefully you have a brother or a father who can beat the "mature" men off of your sister. God, what I wouldnt give to go back to highschool, for just a minute or two.
That comment wasnt meant to be perverted.
But now youve got me scared that it will be misconstrued.
On behalf of my client, Kendra, I would like to say that Timmortal, your comment was not misconstrued. In fact, it was pretty amusing, especially taken with the disclaimers.
Eminem. Heh.
You should enroll her in Barbizon or similar modeling agency. That kid is gorgeous, and not in the way that every teenager is gorgeous.
Timmortal and Thomas,
Fear not my wrath as neither of you are pervs. You're both safe. :)
The same cannot be said for a couple of people but since I have the power of the trash can icon, all is well.
Amber, Beth and Kristina: We all saw this coming right? I mean, you guys have known my sisters since they were minis and they were stunning then. The cool part is that they're both genuinely good people.
Cheryl: Thanks for the kind words and yes, she is totally down to earth. And hurrah for closure is right! :)
I don't care how old you say she is, she is still 4 in my head and I will treat her as such.
I love that term, Kendra..."Archived him." I'm going to use that, it's so true. And I know what you mean about what a great feeling that is. Good for you! And also, your lil sis is GORGEOUS...watch out high school boys!
