I'm Totally Getting a Toolbelt

There’s green paint on my nails. Actually, I believe the color is called “Spring Thaw” and it is now covering the walls of my downstairs bathroom/laundry room.

I usually don’t mind painting; I actually enjoy it. But moving a washing machine and a dryer to paint…that I don’t like so much. Have you ever moved a washing machine? They’re heavy. I moved both away from the wall just enough to wedge myself back there to paint. In the moving, I forgot about the air-flow thingy on the dryer and ripped it out of the wall. Oops.

Painting the shelf above the washer and dryer was a special kind of nightmare. Being that I’m only 5’4” it was all but impossible to reach the top of the shelf without the stepstool. Of course, since I could only move the washer and dryer a short distance from the wall I couldn’t it back there. So I had to wait until that wall was dry, move the washer and dryer back and then paint the top of the shelf while kneeling on the washer and dryer. And the super-fun part? When I was trying to reach a far corner and my knee slipped between the washer and dryer and I used every curse word I’ve ever known.

I also put up a new towel ring and toilet paper holder. My mom had asked if someone was going to help me with that and I laughed at her.

“Mom, I think I’m capable of hanging a towel ring,” I said as my voice dripped with smugness.

Yeah, me and my smugness had a great time hanging the new hardware. And it only took an hour and 10 minutes. What a bitch that was. I made a mental note to myself to buy a drill the next time I’m at the Depot because I really had no business hanging that crap without one.

Note the hardware...still hangin' after 24 hours.
And speaking of hanging things, let me tell you about the gorgeous mirror I hung over the sink. It’s beautiful and I love it but when I dropped it on my thumb I wanted to throw it into the road…and then run it over…roughly twenty-seven times. My thumb was the only thing that kept the gorgeous mirror from tumbling to the floor and I was happy I had avoided not only a shattered mirror but also seven years of bad luck but damn! that really hurt.

More hardware...and the mirror that almost wasn't.
I hung the new black and white photo, put the new bath mat on the floor and set out the biscotti scented candle. Because let's face it, no bathroom is complete without a biscotti scented candle.

When it was all done, I grabbed a glass of wine and perched myself on the dryer to admire my work. I don’t mean to toot my own horn but um…TOOT! I sat there just beaming with pride. I’ve never really done a project like that all by myself and although I know it doesn’t sound like much, I was really proud of myself. Even with a stump thumb and “Spring Thaw” manicure I’m really proud of myself.

You're all growns up! Congrats. I hung up a towel holder all by myself too, but I fear for when the Big One strikes because that thing is comin' down along with all my art, I'm sure.

You're 'bout as handy as a pocket on a shirt! Good work.

Only you can make home improvement a delight to read, definately a good toot. Oh wait - suddenly when i write that it sounds all dirty - in a lady like way of course.

There is something satisfying about knowing you can do Tim the Tool Man tasks with a manicure.

Towel things are a pain in the ass to hang -- hurrah for your handy accomplishments!

I can't believe you didn't call me. I own a drill. I am good at hanging hardware. Heh. I said "hanging hardware." I mean really -- the humor of a 12 year old boy AND a drill? I'm a precious commodity.

I can't wait to see the new bathroom. I'll be there for dinner later...

Um, I am REALLY impressed. I can't even adhere those plastic sticky hooks to my walls.
