Year in Review: 2008

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?
Traveled 38,000 miles in six months; put aside my fear of heights to scale all sorts of crazy rocks in the Badlands; had dinner at Buddakan in NYC; and last but certainly not least - had someone utter the phrase "Tell me about your hurt" (man, that still makes me giggle).

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
If we're telling the truth here, I broke more than I kept...but the ones I stuck to were good ones. And yes, I'll make more this year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
So many babies this year! Rosie had baby Conor; Karen had baby Cooper; Molly had babies McKenna and Gabe; Tamara had babies Madeline and Oliver; Jen had baby Joe; Emily had baby Owen and Veronica had baby Aleesa.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
After a brave, 10 year battle with breast cancer, my Aunt Carol passed away in February.

5. What countries did you visit?
Is Milwaukee a country? Because I spent a crazy amount of time there this year thanks to work. Didn't make it to any other countries but I hit quite a bit of the U.S.A. - Tallahassee, Austin, Kansas City, NYC, Dallas, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, East Lansing (Go Spartans!), Atlanta, Sioux Falls and Custer, SD. And nine trips to Milwaukee. Nine times. I don't remember Ferris being sick nine times. That's probably because he wasn't sick Mrs. Bueller; he was in Milwaukee. (Sidebar: I can't say "nine times" and not launch into a little Ferris quote.)

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
More time sleeping in my own house rather than a hotel room. Oh, and world peace.

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Election day because I feel like I witnessed an important time in history.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not only keeping my job in very uncertain times, but getting a great promotion!

9. What was your biggest failure?
My fat ass. (More to come on that soon)

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Thankfully, no.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My new bed and all the accoutrements that went with it like a super fluffy down comforter, super high thread count sheets, and super kick-ass pillows. The whole thing is super.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Both of my sisters. They both make me so, so proud.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The voters who backed this and Eliot Spitzer.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Savings and the wretched student loans.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
NYC trip in May with two of my blogging buddies, Labor Day road trip with Steve, Marla's week-long visit.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Happier
b) thinner or fatter? Sadly, fatter.
c) richer or poorer? Happily, richer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Exercise, travel for fun, hiking, camping, cooking classes.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Trying to keep it together all by myself.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Cooking, hanging with the fam, opening presents.

21. Did you fall in love in 2008?
Oh true love, why must you evade me? I mean, no.

22. What was your favorite TV program?
The Office, Entourage, CSI: NY and Grey's.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
No.

24. What was the best book you read?
'What I Know Now'

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Adele. Her voice is like buttah.

26. What did you want and get?
Tickets to the Foo Fighters show at Red Rocks - AMAZING!!! Oh, and a wonderful spa weekend at the Brown Palace.

27. What did you want and not get?
A broken relationship with a family member fixed.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
Quantum of Solace; The Dark Knight.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I went to dinner with a few friends at my favorite Highlands spot - Swimclub 32. And like the Swimclub, I was 32.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Going to the Jason Mraz show instead of being on a business trip.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
This question stumps me every year. My fashion concept? What am I, interning for Kelly Cutrone? (Sorry, too much of The Hills this year) Anywho, I'd say I stuck with the classic styles I always like.

32. What kept you sane?
My sisters, cooking, the brown dog, cracking up with friends and finally talking about exactly how I feel.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Duh. So happy he's back on my tv every week. If you haven't seen 'Fringe', you should.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm with Amber on this one - Prop 8. I've gotten on my soapbox on more than one occasion about this. I'm hard pressed to see how the likes of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Taylor and Pamela Anderson value the sanctity of marriage simply because they married men. Or what about Eliot Spitzer and John Edwards? Now there's a couple of men who know the importance of "forsaking all others". Seriously. It's 2009 and this is the USA. Why are we denying people their civil rights? I'm going to move on now before my head explodes.

35. Who did you miss?
Uncle Brad and Aunt Carol.

36. Who was the best new person you met? That tall drink of water, Steve. Ok, so technically we met last year but this year he became one of my nearest and dearest.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
Say what you need to say.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Don't wait, Don't wait
The lights will flash and fade away
The days will pass you by
Don't wait
To lay your armor down
"Don't Wait" - Dashboard Confessional

And let's face it, no one's life is complete without Steve's rendition of Steel Magnolias ;)

I'm glad you aren't keeping things in any more hon. And that you're blogging again. And not traveling all the work travel. If you want to travel for fun, might I suggest a trip to the Midwest?

This is awesome, Kendra. I learned the same thing in 08: "Say what you need to say." I am still having a hard time doing it, but I know it's important.

Happy New Year my wonderful friend!
